Overview

Reference data is known by many different names; lookup values, picklists, name-value pair, code tables, drop-down values, domain tables, taxonomies, hierarchies or glossaries to name a few. At its core reference data is the discovery and classification of a specific set of data, standardized for identifying, categorizing, and tagging data elements.

All applications use reference data in some way to classify and categorize records. Good reference systems allow for variations of code sets to define the same thing in different ways for different applications.
